THE HISTORY OF BISHOP NDINGI SCHOOLS

Bishop Ndingi Schools was founded when The Congregation of Sisters of the Incarnate Word began its mission in Kenya in 1981 when, at the request of Sister Rosa Marta of the Mexican Province of the Religious of the Incarnate Word, Bishop Raphael Ndingi, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Nakuru, invited a Sister to lead a public health project in East Pokot, a remote area of his Diocese. Sister Mary Celestine Kavanagh, a community health nurse, was the first of our Sisters to be missioned there. Sister Gabrielle Duane, the second of our Sisters in Kenya, was teaching at the Minor Seminary in Kenya, when she had the idea for a school for children. She pursued its founding and stayed until the school began. Following Sister Gabrielle, Sister Denise Kearney served as manager of Bishop Ndingi Primary School for twenty-six years. The Congregation celebrated its 25th anniversary in Kenya in 2006. Through the years, the Congregation’s ministries have spread in health care and in education.

In the year 1988, The Catholic Diocese of Nakuru founded Bishop Ndingi Primary School. The Diocese sought to offer quality education to learners in the community who previously lacked the financial means to attend school. In 1990 the Diocese of Nakuru handed over the Bishop Ndingi Primary School Management to the CCVI sisters, with Sr. Denise serving as the Director. Since 2023, Mr. Waweru has been serving as the headteacher. The concept to launch Bishop Ndingi Secondary School was conceived later in the year—. The primary school board of members were involved in raising and mobilizing the idea. The first principal was appointed in 2019 and assumed leadership of the school’s establishment. Prior to the hiring of the first teachers in December 2019, the Principal, Mr. Peter Murigi was the only member of the secondary school faculty. In January 2020, the secondary school admitted the first ——boys and girls with 8 teachers and a few support staff. At that time, Sr. Rose was the school director. The students were accommodated in the Primary school as the main school complex had not been constructed. In November 2021, the school construction started. The school soon outgrew the facilities the Primary School could offer, and so in 2022, the Secondary School moved to the incomplete structures. In January 2023 the school was fully established and has steadily grown in terms of Physical facilities and student performance. Sr. Rose retired in December 2022
